Types of Pearls

There are three types of pearls: Natural, Cultured and Imitation. A natural pearl is formed when an irritant, such as a piece of sand, works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant. Several such layers make a beautiful pearl.

A cultured pearl is also formed under the same process. The only difference is that the irritant is a surgically implanted bead. Mostly these shells are ground oyster shells that command a great deal of money in their own right as irritant-catalysts for quality pearls. The sources of these cultured pearls can be either salt or freshwater. Usually saltwater pearls are considered of higher quality but some freshwater pearls are also of high quality.

Imitation pearls are man-made materials, can be made from glass, ceramic, shell or even plastic.
